The specialist areas have their own consultant on call rotas. The department has approximately 70 consultants and specialists supported by many residents (approx 60) and LEDs: The central operating department has 17 theatres and covers the following surgical specialties – plastics and trauma, max fax and ENT, upper and lower GI, general emergencies including some gynaecology, urgent orthopaedics (includes some spines) and paediatrics. The majority of these are tertiary referral specialties. Satellite areas include 3 ophthalmic theatres, angiography and radiology (including regular MRI GA sessions) theatres, assisted fertility, community dental and paediatric oncology sessions. There are many high-risk outpatient assessment clinics to cover the specialties we serve. The maternity unit is a tertiary centre with a delivery rate that fluctuates from about 6000 to 6500 deliveries per year. We are the East Midlands lead for abnormally adherent placentas (acreta). The Intensive care unit has a direct take from the Emergency Department and has staffing for a dependency of approximately 25 over 28 physical beds. Our ICM consultants also have regular sessions in central operating. The hospital is a level 2 trauma centre and we transfer out major neurosurgery to local centres.

Facilities

Operating theatres: 33 theatres across four complexes, plus five interventional radiology rooms suitable for anaesthetic care.

Specialist services: tertiary paediatrics and neurosurgery (regional centre), complex vascular, hepatobiliary, maxillofacial, ENT, trauma and ophthalmic surgery.

Obstetrics: busy delivery suite (circa 4,000 births/year).

Consultant body: cross‑site department with ~100 substantive consultants across Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield, and Leicester General Hospital

Training modules

Head and Neck

General Anaesthesia

Novice training

Trauma

Paediatrics

Obstetrics

Acute and Chronic Pain

ICM

Emergencies

Gynaecology

Getting here

Address: Leicester Royal Infirmary, Infirmary Square, Leicester, LE1 5WW

By tram: Short walk from Leicester train station

By bus: Multiple services stop at the main entrance

Hospital Hopper: Free for journeys from UHL sites (with ID card).
