Introduction

Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) is a large teaching hospital and the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, offering a high‑volume, high‑acuity environment for anaesthetic training across the full range of specialties. Trainees benefit from strong links with the University of Nottingham and a comprehensive formal teaching programme.

Facilities

Training modules

  • General Anaesthesia (GA): including paediatrics and neurosurgery exposure (QMC is the only neurosurgery site in East Midlands).
  • Major surgery: vascular, hepatobiliary, maxillofacial, ENT, spinal and trauma lists.
  • Obstetric anaesthesia: full labour ward and elective/urgent obstetric theatre experience.
  • Ophthalmic anaesthesia and day‑surgery pathways.
  • Teaching & simulation: weekly journal club (cross‑site), departmental teaching (~½ day/month), divisional teaching (10 half‑days/year + joint surgical day), access to Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre and DREEAM programmes.
  • On‑call structure: five tiers (four general, one obstetric); separate ICM on‑calls managed by Critical Care; typical 1:8–1:9 rota including nights and weekends.
